AI Tools and the New Nervous System
AI is not just another productivity app. It is becoming a cognitive prosthetic, a confession booth, a workflow engine, and a very polite pressure washer for thought.
The least interesting way to talk about AI is to ask whether it is magic or garbage. It is obviously neither. It is a very strange tool: sometimes brilliant, sometimes drunk on confidence, sometimes useful precisely because it gives you something to argue with.
The better question is where it enters the body.
Search entered through curiosity. Social media entered through status and loneliness. Smartphones entered through convenience and then quietly annexed the nervous system. AI is entering through friction. The blank page. The messy inbox. The unstarted plan. The codebase you are afraid to touch. The document you understand but cannot yet shape. The thought that feels too slippery to hold alone.
That makes AI intimate in a way most software is not.
When a tool helps you think, it also learns where thinking hurts. It sees hesitation, repetition, tone, ambition, insecurity, curiosity, and the little bargains people make with themselves before they write anything honest. This is why privacy around AI cannot be treated like a checkbox buried under “improve our services.” The prompt is not just input. It is residue from the inside of the head.
The workflow gains are real. I like AI best when it becomes a second set of hands: summarizing the boring pile, drafting the first ugly version, finding the missing edge case, turning a vague plan into steps, stress-testing the sentence that sounds brave but may just be self-important. It is less replacement than amplification. A pressure washer for thought.
But the danger is also real: outsourcing taste.
Taste is the part of intelligence that says no. No to the obvious structure. No to the paragraph that technically works but has no pulse. No to the feature that users will tolerate but not love. No to the idea that speed is the same as judgment. AI can help produce options. It cannot care which option makes you more yourself unless you remain present enough to choose.
The best AI workflow I know has three modes.
First, friction removal: use the machine to get unstuck. Let it turn dread into a draft. Let it sort the drawer. Let it make the boring thing less sticky.
Second, adversarial review: make it challenge your assumptions. Ask what is missing, what is weak, what would fail under stress, what a skeptical reader would hate.
Third, human re-entry: take the work back. Read it out loud. Cut the fake confidence. Put the bruise back in. Add the sentence only you would write.
The people who benefit most from AI will not be the ones who let it average them into competence. They will be the ones who use it to protect attention for the parts of work that still require nerve.
There is a future where AI makes everything smoother and everyone duller. There is another where it gives more people leverage to make stranger, sharper, more personal work.
The difference is not the model.
It is whether you stay in the room.
